With the cherry blossoms in bloom for Spring here, Aussies are looking for their next, equally picturesque, Japanese experience – snow, ski and sake for Winter!  

Given the mirroring seasons, we are seeing a large number of people travelling to destinations that have upcoming winter seasons, particularly during extended holiday periods for Aussies. Japan is just one of the winter escapes that are piquing the interest of Australian International Travellers, here’s some of our key insights. 

The cheapest period to travel to Japan is during winter, with flights around $315 cheaper on average compared to during Cherry Blossom season, which is the busiest time to travel to Japan.

Of the key departure points from Australia, 47.8% are flying out of Sydney, 30.2% out of Brisbane, 20% from Melbourne and 2% out of Cairns. 90.3% of those users are flying into an airport in Tokyo. The remaining travellers (9.7%) are flying into airports in Kyoto & Osaka.

Travellers from Melbourne and Sydney are more likely to travel as individuals while those from Brisbane and Cairns are more likely to travel as a couple. They are beginning their booking process now with an average purchase window of 179 days (DEC to FEB travel dates). 

Users travelling to Japan have shown an interest in the following travel products:

  • 73% are interested in Travel Credit Cards
  • 30% are travelling for adventure activities; such as hiking and snow sports
  • 15% are frequent flyer program members
  • 14% are interested in Travel Insurance
