Given the large number of people living in Australia who are originally from the UK and Ireland, it’s no surprise that during the Christmas closure period, many decide to return home. 

Those returning home are paying around $2,745.37 during this period. The non-holiday period leading up to Christmas (mid November to mid December) is around 27% cheaper to fly, with an average flight costing $1,993.87, whilst post-Christmas and New Years sees a slight drop (4.9%) in average cost of flights at $2,612.87. 

Travellers are planning their trips around 127 days out from their trip and staying just over 3 weeks (23.75 days) for December to early February travel dates. 

Nearly half of those returning home for the holidays or looking for a winter trip are flying out of Sydney (43%), while Brisbane and Melbourne departures make up (47.5%). Travellers from Perth and Adl account for only 9.2% of people interested in travelling to the UK during the Christmas period.  

94.1% of people are flying into London Heathrow. During this period, 14.8% of the overall travellers into London, are then taking off on their next leg to Ireland. 

Sydney Travellers are more likely to be going overseas on a family trip, while Brisbane travellers are interested in heading over with one other companion. People travelling out of Melbourne, Perth and Adeliade are more likely to be departing solo. 

People travelling to England are also interested in travelling within Europe to countries such as Germany (32% overlap), France (27% overlap), Spain (22% overlap) & Italy (23% overlap).
